The U.S. unemployment rate dropped to 7.8 percent in September from 8.1 percent in August, the U.S. Department of Labor reported.

Private payrolls rose 104,000 in the month, following an increase of 119,000 in August. The government sector added 10,000 in the month after adding 45,000 in August.
