The average cost of diesel in the U.S. fell 0.8 percent, or 3.4 cents, in the week ending Oct. 22, 2012.
For a larger version of the chart, click on the image.The average cost per gallon, $4.116, was up 29.1 cents from the same period a year ago, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
Prices went down in almost all regions, with the sole exception a rise of 0.5 cents in New England. The largest decline was seen in California, where prices retreated 5.2 cents to an average of $4.385 per gallon, still the highest level in the country. The 2.3-cent decline in the Gulf Coast region brought prices there back just barely below $4, to $3.999 per gallon on average.
