Transportation and warehousing employment increased 2.2 percent in October from a year ago, but was essentially flat from the previous month.
Seasonally adjusted data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show a 93,200 job gain in transportation and warehousing from October 2011.
Total non-farm payroll increased by 171,000 jobs in October, while the national average unemployment rate rose slightly to 7.9 percent, the BLS said.
Trucking employment increased 3.6 percent from a year ago, with companies surveyed by the federal agency adding 47,200 jobs over the past 12 months.
The trucking firms surveyed by the BLS — more than 100,000 — added 3,600 jobs from September through October, according to the seasonally adjusted data.
The for-hire trucking companies surveyed by the BLS employ 1.354 million people.
Employment in water transportation increased 7.5 percent to 67,800 jobs, according to the BLS. Warehousing and storage employment rose 3.2 percent.
Employment in air transportation declined 0.9 percent, and rail employment fell 0.7 percent from a year ago, according to the preliminary BLS data for October.
