A jump in energy prices helped push the Consumer Price Index up 0.6 percent in September on a seasonally adjusted basis following the same increase in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Year-over-year, the index rose 2 percent in September following a 1.7 percent increase in August.
Food prices edged up 0.1 percent in September following a 0.2 percent increase in August. Year-over-year growth was 1.6 percent in September, following a 2 percent rise in August. Year-over-year food prices rose 1.6 percent in September after a 2 percent increase in August.
The energy index showed a month-to-month 4.5 percent increase in September following a 5.6 percent rise in August. Energy prices were up 2.3 percent year-over-year, in contrast to August’s decline of 0.6 percent.
The index for all items except food and energy — the core consumer price index — was up 0.1 percent for the third consecutive month. The year-over-year core consumer price index for September rose 2 percent following a 1.9 percent rise in August.
