Freight volume carried by for-hire transportation companies in April fell 1 percent from the previous month but was up 3.7 percent from April 2010, the Transportation Department reported.
The DOT’s seasonally adjusted Freight Transportation Services Index, which measures shipments in ton-miles, has risen in 17 of the last 24 months and is at about the same level as September 2008, when the financial crisis erupted.
The index has risen 14 percent since May 2009. It fell 15.7 percent in the previous 15 months beginning in February 2008. During the first four months of this year, the index was up 0.6 percent.
