Online sales grew 5 percent on Cyber Monday, Nov. 30, compared with the Monday after Thanksgiving last year, said Web commerce analyst comScore.
Cyber Monday’s sales also matched the all-time record for the busiest day on the Web, as consumers spent approximately $887 million, the same as Dec. 9, 2008. Online sales are expected to grow as the season continues, pushing retailers to beef up inventory at the last minute and giving shippers some welcome pressure.
The number of consumers shopping online increased 6 percent on Nov. 30, but they spent 2 percent less, or $102.19 each on average, said comScore. “Every year there are more people that take to e-commerce,” said Gian Fulgoni, chairman of comScore.
The faster pace of online sales countered indications of a slow start to the peak shopping season as sales at brick-and-mortar retailers over the weekend rose only 1.6 percent to $20.5 billion.
