(Berlin/Essen, May 26, 2010) DB Schenker now links up road and rail services even more effectively: the new DB SCHENKERhangartner service offers customers from trade and industry the combination of trucking and rail services from one source.
Pick-up and delivery services are handled by truck, with freight consignments using unaccompanied combined transportation services on rail for the main section of the transport.
"We would like to get more shipments onto rail. The idea behind this new service is to provide a simple linkup of road and rail transportation modes, which industry and politicians favor, as an integral part of our European product portfolio," stressed Karl Nutzinger, who as CEO Europe is responsible for European Land Transport at Schenker AG.
"To make this possible, we have now integrated the proven range of services offered by our subsidiary Hangartner into our country organizations. We are combining the flexibility of the truck with the benefits of rail transportation, which will also have a positive impact on the environmental footprint of our customers. To meet changing customer needs, we have also upgraded the service by adding quality features from other services in our Land Transport portfolio."
The new product is subject to the end-to-end quality system of DB Schenker LogisticsŽ Land Transport services, for example, and we will shortly be offering a shipment tracking option as a completely new service on the intermodal market.
DB Schenker is offering the new service on the North-South corridor through the country organizations of Finland, Sweden and Norway via central Europe down to Italy and vice versa. For this purpose, the company's intermodal operating center, which is headquartered in Zürich, Switzerland, will operate around 4,000 block trains a year, primarily using its dedicated rolling stock, providing regular scheduled services several times a week on fixed routes. The company operates its own terminals in Domodossola and Verona in Italy and also has around 4,300 company-owned loading units available to provide reliable handling from a single source, plus additional logistics services.
An extension of the service to the West is being prepared. The solution is particularly suited to customers shipping heavy consignments such as paper, white goods, beverages and furniture.
As its fifth product, the new service is an integral part of DB Schenker LogisticsŽ European Land Transport services. The new intermodal service also guarantees additional flexibility in cases where trucks cannot be used, in the event of weekend or Sunday driving bans for instance, or tunnel restrictions for certain types of hazardous goods and heavy loads.
