The value of India’s exports jumped 13.0 percent year-over-year in August 2013, according to India’s Ministry of Commerce. The trade deficit fell 23 percent from last August to $10.9 billion.

U.S. cross-border traffic with Canada via truck and rail declined 2.1 percent from $39.2 billion in June 2012 to $38.4 billion this June, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The value of imports by rail from Canada was the only of these types of surface trade to see a slight increase year-over-year.

The value of India’s exports increased 11.6 percent year-over-year in July, according to India’s Ministry of Commerce. This was the largest increase since October 2011, and was preceded by two months of declines.

U.S. containerized exports slipped 0.8 percent in March 2013 year-over-year, totaling 1,072,190 20-foot-equivalent units, according to preliminary figures from PIERS, a JOC sister company. However, this is the highest monthly volume since March 2012 when exports totaled 1,080,341 TEUs.

U.S. agricultural exports continued to decline for a third straight month while imports grew for a fourth consecutive month in May. As a result, the trade surplus fell to $935 million, the first time it stood below $1 billion since the JOC began collecting this data in February 2011.

Journal of Commerce Economist Mario Moreno kept his below 4 percent growth outlook for this year’s westbound trans-Pacific container trade, as he doesn’t expect the reverse of European and U.S. fiscal imbalances in the first quarter to offset significant risks ahead for the trade lane. The trade is forecast to total 6.9 million TEUs this year, a rebound of 3.9 percent over prior year’s volumes, according to the June Container Shipping Outlook.
