Spot container freight rates measured by the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index were mixed this week, as the Asia-Europe lane observed declines while the Asia-U.S. route saw gains.
The SCFI for North Europe rose 2.3 percent in the week ending April 4.

Spot container freight rates from Shanghai to U.S. ports saw some implementation of the upcoming general rate increase in the week of March 14. Both East and West Coast lanes saw increases of more than $100 per FEU. Member carriers in the Transpacific Stabilization Agreement planneda $300 per FEU increase to take effect on March 15 on the Asia-US trade lanes.

Spot container freight rates from Shanghai to U.S. ports fell about $70 per 40-foot container from last week, while rates from Shanghai to northern European and Mediterranean ports dropped more than $100 per TEU for the fourth straight week in the week of March 7. U.S-bound trade lanes have not seen an increase in seven weeks and Europe-bound lanes in nine weeks.

Spot container rates from Asia to northern European and Mediterranean ports measured by the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index experienced declines of roughly $60 in the week ending Dec. 20, only one week after jumping more than $500 per 20-foot-equivalent unit in each lane last week. Carriers such as Mediterranean Shipping Co., Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk Line and CMA CGM had called for increases of between $750 and $775 per TEU.

Both Mediterranean and northern European lanes have declined for three consecutive weeks, following jumps from the Nov. 1 GRI of between $700 and $800 per 20-foot-equivalent.
