The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index saw further rate erosion in European lanes, pulling the overall SCFI index below the $1,000 per 20-foot container mark for the first time since February 2012, to $990.78.

The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index has fallen below the $1,000 per 20-foot container mark in European lanes in the week prior to another proposed, but possibly delayed, general rate increase set for April 15 for carriers such as Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk Line, MSC and Cosco.

The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index was affected by a general rate increase from Asia to Europe on March 15, with rates on both European lanes jumping 42 percent per 20-foot container mark, according to data issued by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange. The GRI was projected to be about $700.

The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index was not published today due to the Chinese New Year, but despite some buoyancy in the trans-Pacific market analysts are downbeat on the prospect of rate increases once the SCFI resumes publishing next Friday, Feb. 22.

Rates on east-west trade lanes drifted lower in the Friday release of the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index ahead of a one-week lapse of the index because of the Chinese New Year holiday. “The trend seen over the past of few weeks has continued with steady but fairly low declines across all the main trade lanes,” ICAP said.

Spot container rates out of Shanghai weakened marginally last week, continuing a pattern in which rates will show gains around the dates of a general rate increase only to erode in subsequent weeks. Last week’s erosion in the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index or SCFI is “in anticipation of low demand expected during the … upcoming Chinese New Year festivities,” ICAP said.
