Stories in this category track weekly changes in domestic U.S. spot intermodal rates (all-in, door-to-door '53 moves) obtained from the railroads via the 3PL IDS. They contain analysis of four U.S. directional indices as well as selected individual lanes, with commentary from industry experts.

Westbound U.S. intermodal rates dropped once again in the week of August 12, putting the average at its lowest since the week of June 17, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. Despite this drop, the composite index remained mostly flat, down only 69 cents to $2,017.

Westbound U.S. intermodal rates slipped again in the week of August 5, pulling down the overall national index, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. The composite index edged down 0.3 percent or $5 to $2,018.

The overall index of U.S. intermodal rates slipped in the week of July 29, mostly due to a drop in the East-West directional index, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. The index edged down 0.3 percent or $7 to $2,023.

The overall index of U.S. intermodal rates for the week of July 22 rose $11 from the week before, due to increases in all directional indices except for eastbound lanes, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. The index edged up 0.6 percent to $2,030.

The composite index of U.S. intermodal rates for the week of July 15 rose $20 from the week before, a result of increases in all directional indices, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. The index climbed 1 percent to $2,019 in the week of July 15.

U.S. westbound intermodal rates increased for a second consecutive week, albeit minimally, as the overall U.S. index slipped, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. The overall U.S. index edged down 0.4 percent or $9 to $2,007.50, due mostly to a steep decline in northbound lanes in the week of July 1.

Westbound U.S. intermodal rates jumped more than 2 percent this week, rebounding from last week’s 1 percent decline, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. The overall index was brought up 1 percent or $21 to $2,016 due to increases in three of the four directional indices in the week of June 24.

U.S. intermodal rates for east-to-west shipments fell this week, the only of the directional indices to see a decline, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. The top 12 and top 18 combined lanes, which include the big city lanes of Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Dallas, Atlanta and Seattle, saw mixed week-to-week changes. The top 18 saw a jump of $22 to $1,918.33, close to the $17 increase experienced by the overall index. However, the top 12 only increased by $1.25 to $2,072.92. The difference was in a $120 climb in the Chicago-Dallas lane, not included in the top 12, which elevated the top 18 and the overall index.

U.S. intermodal rates going east-to-west and west-to-east saw slight increases this week, although a larger drop in the south-north index kept the overall U.S. index down 14 cents below where it stood last week, now at $1,978.61, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS.
