Stories in this category track weekly changes in domestic U.S. spot intermodal rates (all-in, door-to-door '53 moves) obtained from the railroads via the 3PL IDS. They contain analysis of four U.S. directional indices as well as selected individual lanes, with commentary from industry experts.

An index of 36 major U.S. intermodal lanes climbed 1.9 percent or $40 from the week before to $2,166 in the week of March 31, the eleventh weekly increase in the fourteen weeks of 2014 so far, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. Rates have climbed 6.7 percent since the beginning of 2014 and are up 7.3 percent from the rate one year ago, when it stood at $2,019.

An index of 36 major U.S. intermodal lanes edged up 0.1 percent from the week before to $2,080 in the week of Mar. 10, the sixth straight weekly increase by roughly 1 percent or less, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. The current index is up 1.8 percent from the rate one year ago, when it stood at $2,044, and up 2.5 percent from the beginning of 2014.

An index of 36 major U.S. intermodal lanes fell $93 from the prior week to $2,014 in the week of Jan. 27, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. This drop eroded the $88 combined increase from the past two weeks. The current rate is down 2.8 percent from the rate one year ago, when it stood at $2,072.

An index of U.S. intermodal rates slipped to $1,991 in the week of Dec. 16, as all four directional indices decreased week-to-week. The overall index rate of the top 36 U.S. lanes decreased 1.8 percent, or $36, during this week according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. This is the index’s lowest level since the week of June 10, 2013.

An index of U.S. intermodal rates fell more than $100 in the week ending Dec. 2, as all four directional indices decreased. The overall index rate of the top 36 U.S. lanes was down 5.1 percent, or $108, at $2,019, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. This is the biggest drop in close to a year and the lowest rate since Aug. 19, 2013.

An index of U.S. intermodal rates fell once again in the week ending Nov. 18, pulled lower by declines in all four directional indices. The overall index rate of the top 36 U.S. lanes decreased 2.2 percent, or $46, to $2,076, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. The index has fallen roughly $70 during the past two weeks.

An index of U.S. intermodal rates saw a slight increase in the week ending Nov. 4 after two consecutive weeks of decline. The overall index rate of the top 36 U.S. lanes inched up 0.4 percent, or $9.03, to $2,145, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS.

The index for the week ending Oct. 7 of U.S. intermodal rates climbed for a fourth straight week, with eastbound rate increases continuing to pull the average up, according to data on all-inclusive 53-foot door-to-door spot pricing quoted by railroads and provided by the 3PL IDS. The overall rate rose 1.1 percent or $23 in the week to $2,139, yielding a cumulative increase of $107 over the past four weeks. Despite the increases, when comparing 18lanes of this index that have been recorded for the past year, the average is down 6.3 percent year-over-year.
