Spot rates on containerized freight as quoted per 40-foot container (FEU) from Hong Kong to the Los Angeles on a weekly basis, based on the weekly Hong Kong-Los Angeles Container Rate Benchmark, a bellweather trans-Pacific eastbound spot rate index issued each Wednesday by Drewry Shipping Consultants. This benchmark reflects the spot rates of the Hong Kong export container transport market. Spot container freight rates from Shanghai to U.S. ports fell about $70 per 40-foot container from last week, while rates from Shanghai to northern European and Mediterranean ports dropped more than $100 per TEU for the fourth straight week in the week of March 7. U.S-bound trade lanes have not seen an increase in seven weeks and Europe-bound lanes in nine weeks.

The Drewry benchmark rate for shipping from Hong Kong to Los Angeles remained unchanged in the week of Dec. 18, following three straight weeks of decline. This comes two days before an attempt by the member lines in the Transpacific Stabilization Agreement to launch the first of a two-stage rate increase. Carriers including Hapag Lloyd, OOCL, Cosco and U.S. Lines are adopting general rate increases of $200 per 40-foot container, effective Dec. 20 in the Asia-to-U.S. trade lane.

The Transpacific Stabilization Agreement had suggested an increase of $400 per FEU, set for Nov. 15, and this week’s increase corresponds to 62 percent of this proposed GRI.
