James R. Hertwig, president and CEO at Florida East Coast Railway, says bulk rail demand has been soft for the Florida regional line but intermodal is picking up.
He tells John D. Boyd, associate editor for The Journal of Commerce, that FEC will begin hauling loads from a new intermodal construction project at the Port of Miami early in 2012, and in 2013 will open an on-dock rail intermodal facility at Port Everglades.
Those should add to total container volume for FEC but also increase the number of loaded boxes it moves and reduce empties, for a higher revenue stream.
