Congestion surcharge on incoming cargo will take effect Feb. 1

Mediterranean Shipping Company imposed a port congestion surcharge on all cargo moving to the Port of Mombasa, Kenya, starting Feb. 1.

The planned surcharge will be $150 per 20-foot equivalent unit.

“Persistent delays of more than ten days in the port of Mombasa and without any immediate solutions have prompted us to proceed with the implementation of a congestion surcharge,” MSC said.

The move follows similar surcharge announcements by other major container ship operators including Maersk Line, CMA CGM and Emirates Shipping Line.
