Appointment to Marine Atlantic Inc.

OTTAWA — The Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport), today announced the appointment of Mr. Paul Griffin of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, as president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Marine Atlantic for a five-year term, effective May 3, 2012.

“I am pleased that Mr. Griffin has accepted this position,” said Minister Fletcher. “He has demonstrated his leadership skills as interim president and CEO, and shown his capacity for strategic planning throughout the revitalization of Marine Atlantic Inc. His experience will be a tremendous asset to the corporation.”

Mr. Griffin, who has been acting as interim president and CEO since December 2011, served as vice-president of Strategy and Corporate Affairs at Marine Atlantic Inc. from July 2009 to December 2011. During that time he worked tirelessly on the organization’s renewal strategy with clear results. His past experience includes serving as president of Rutter Technologies from 2005 to 2008, and president of NewTech Instruments Limited from 2001 to 2005. He holds a bachelor of electrical engineering from Memorial University of Newfoundland and has served on the board of directors of the Newfoundland and Labrador Division of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Association and the Cygnus Gymnastics Training Centre, among others.

Marine Atlantic Inc. is a federal Crown corporation that reports to Parliament through the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. The corporation provides a constitutionally mandated passenger and commercial marine transportation service between the Island of Newfoundland and the Province of Nova Scotia. Its mission is to provide a safe, environmentally responsible and quality ferry service in a reliable and cost-effective manner.
