ALAN J. HERBERT, our insurance editor these past two years, reversed the usual

procedure. He started in radio and television, then switched to print. In what has come to be known as the electronic media, he acknowledged, he sometimes had to fudge it. When the red light was on and the camera running, you say something - even if nothing were happening.

That seldom was his problem at the Journal of Commerce where he was an inspired teacher and coach of younger staff members as well as an outstanding reporter and editor. Not much went on that Alan didn't have something to say about, often with acerbic wit. His time in broadcasting was entirely as a newsman. He well could have served, however, as a talk show host.All deaths are untimely. Alan's, however, was especially so. We shall miss him greatly.
