Nippon Yusen to Merge NYK Logistics, YAS

Japanese units to merge this year, overseas integration by 2012

NYK Line said Thursday it will merge its domestic logistics unit in Japan with its freight forwarding subsidiary, Yusen Air & Sea Service, on Oct. 1.

The merger will help streamline the group's domestic logistics business, and eventually consolidate its international operations, Japan’s largest shipping company said yesterday after signing a letter of intent.

Plans for the merger were announced last November. Post-merger, the NYK subsidiary will change its name to Yusen Logistics Co.

The companies’ international logistics operations will be merged gradually from April 2011 through March 2012, Nippon Yusen said.
