FedEx Upgrades Cold Chain Shipping

The Journal of Commerce Online - News Story
CryoPort Systems provides advanced frozen shipping technology

FedEx Express agreed to use a cold chain system provided by CryoPort Systems for frozen shipments for the life science industry.

CryoPort Express Shipper allows for products to remain frozen for up to 10 days at temperatures of 150 below zero degrees Celsius or minus 238 degrees Fahrenheit.

Unlike traditional dry ice shipping, the CryoPort system does not require re-icing during transit. The technology also eliminates greenhouse gas emissions and landfill disposal issues associated with traditional dry ice methods, the companies said in a joint statement.

Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide and sublimates into large quantities of gas when exposed to open air.

“This new frozen shipping solution significantly enhances our customers’ product integrity versus the traditional dry ice and over pack solution,” said Jerry Beyl, FedEx vice president of worldwide services. “We are very pleased to add this innovative solution to the FedEx suite of life science industry offerings.”
