Patrick R. Donahoe, Postmaster General, has urged Congress to reform the Postal Service’s business model to alleviate the agency’s worsening financial problems.
Testifying before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Donahue said the Postal Service will continue to take steps to increase revenue and reduce operating expenses, but needs legislative changes to return to long-term financial stability.
Specifically, the Postal Service is seeking legislative provisions that would require the agency to sponsor its own health care plan, remove business-model restrictions, revise retirement contribution plans for employees and avoid restrictions on the announced move to a five-day mail delivery schedule.
