Peruvian airline StarPeru is expanding into the cargo business beyond its niche passenger operations with the purchase of a BAe- 146QT freighter for regional shipping customers.
The Lima-based carrier’s purchase adds some dedicated all-cargo capability to one of Latin America’s fastest growing economies. Peru’s economy expanded 8.8 percent last year and the International Monetary Fund projects 6.6 percent growth this year.
The freighter, purchased from the British Titan Airways, will join StarPeru’s fleet of 15 British Aerospace passenger planes the airline uses to serve 15 destinations in Peru and Brazil.
Founded in 1996, StarPeru began as a charter and cargo service, flying to remote jungle destinations to accommodate oil exploration. The company introduced scheduled commercial service in 2004 and added its first flight outside Peru to Brazil in 2010. The company has 500 employees.
