Hong Kong International Airport saw cargo volumes increase in August on the back of strong trade to and from Japan and South East Asia and a 3 percent increase in exports.
Throughput of 328,000 tons in August was, however, some 7,000 tons lower than in July.
The world’s largest airport by international tonnage in 2011 saw cargo throughput over the first eight months of the year grow 0.2 percent year-over-year to 2.6 million tons of cargo, although on a 12-month rolling basis volumes were down 2.2 percent.
Asia Airfreight Terminal, a leading handler at HKIA, said its volumes increased 7 percent year-over-year last month to 58,985 tons, with exports of 41,396 tons representing an 8 percent gain compared to August 2011.
Rival handler Hactl said its August volumes were 2.7 percent higher than a year earlier, with transshipment traffic up 11.8 percent but exports down 0.4 percent at 117,291 tons.
