Air freight movements will more than double by 2031 according to the latest projections by Airports Council International.
ACI’s latest report, Global Traffic Forecast 2012-2031, reports that in 2011 global freight shipments totalled around 93 million tons. With 4.5 percent growth forecast for the next 20 years, ACI said volumes in 2013 would reach 225 million tons.
“Freight operations measured in tons should grow faster than passenger operations,” ACI said. “Economic activity is expected to remain the main driver of growth in freight. Domestic demand typically drives freight activity and globalization boosts international freight operations as trade expands.”
