With international package volume rising, DHL Express is hiring as many as 300 workers at its hub in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Starting Tuesday, the Deutsche Post subsidiary will begin hiring package sort, ground and ramp operations workers in Cincinnati.
“Significant positive trends in package volumes coupled with a need to keep our hub operation adequately staffed for peak shipping periods has opened up hundreds of opportunities for local workers,” said Michael Munn, vice president of human resources at DHL Express.
Most of the available positions are part-time, he said. DHL expects to hire 200 package workers in June and another 100 in July.
Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport became DHL’s U.S. hub last year when the company reconfigured its U.S. network, dropping out of the domestic package market.
The company eliminated about 8,000 jobs in Wilmington, Ohio, when it closed its domestic hub there. That air park was handed to the county government last week.
The international package expeditor has about 550 full-time and 990 part-time employees at the Cincinnati-area airport.
DHL reported an $876 million profit in 2009, despite a 15.2 percent drop in revenue, after restructuring in the U.S. and overseas.
“Shipping volumes are going up again,” Deustche Post CEO Frank Appel told the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington April 14.
The company employs 34,000 people in the U.S., Appel said. “We are still relevant in the U.S. Our business in the U.S. is growing.”
