The airline operates twice-weekly Boeing 767-300ER flights from Berlin’s Tegal Airport to Ulaanbaatar, the largest city and capital of Mongolia. Globe Air Cargo, part of ECS Group, will also market cargo capacity on MIAT Mongolian Airlines’ wide-body flights to Seoul and its services to Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Osaka.

During the summer period, its flights from Berlin increase to four a week, building on Mongolia’s close economic and cultural ties with Germany. This is the first time the airline has appointed a single GSSA partner for Europe and Globe Air Cargo expects to generate some 1,000 tonnes of cargo a year for MIAT from Europe, including machinery, spares, electrical, pharmaceutical and chemical shipments.

Mark Grinsted, Commercial Director of Globe Air Cargo in Germany, said: “Our relationship with MIAT Mongolian Airlines was cemented in 2010 when for a period of six weeks during the summer, the airline operated a weekly B767 from Berlin to Ulaanbaatar and the same aircraft then connected onto Tokyo. Globe Air Cargo purchased all of the capacity on these flights and successfully sold Tokyo via Ulaanbaatar in the German market. This was the first time the airline had seen their base in Mongolia used as a transit point for international cargo and new customs procedures had to be introduced to allow this. It was a success that the airline has never forgotten.

“More recently we have been able to connect the MIAT network with one of Globe Air Cargo’s Chinese airline partners and we have developed a strong relationship with freight forwarders in Berlin that specialise in serving the Mongolian market. The purchase of its new B767-300ER from Boeing this summer provided the airline with the opportunity to further develop its cargo business and they have recognised Globe Air Cargo as having the capability and network to do this.”
