Cargo traffic at Memphis International Airport grew 2.1 percent in June from the same month a year ago, an uptick that provided signs of life in the U.S. air express market.
The small gain followed a 5.4 percent decline in May and cargo tonnage at Memphis also jumped more than 14 percent sequentially from May to June.
The main hub for FedEx Express and the largest cargo airport in the United States, Memphis is a big bellwether of expedited shipping demand and the site’s numbers were lagging earlier this year.
But FedEx’s domestic cargo tonnage jumped 6.7 percent from May to June, according to airport figures, and was up 2.1 percent over the same month last year. International tonnage was up slightly.
June’s overall figures at Memphis were still behind the total cargo tonnage for March, however, and volume at the airport was down 0.2 percent in the first six months of the year against the first half of 2010.
