Lufthansa plans to build a modern logistics center at Germany’s Frankfurt Airport despite the ban on night flights there.
The Lufthansa Group Supervisory Board on Wednesday approved the investment in a new building that will go into operation in 2018, replacing the existing Lufthansa Cargo Center, which is more than 30 years old.
Lufthansa described the size of the investment as being “a mid-triple-digit million euro sum.”
Lufthansa CEO and Chairman Dr. Christoph Franz said Frankfurt would remain the central hub for the Lufthansa Group’s cargo business, despite the night-flight ban.
The new logistics center will be built mainly on Lufthansa Cargo’s existing site in the northern part of Frankfurt Airport.
Lufthansa said the logistics center will use new technology that will enable it to provide much faster turnaround times for shipments and improve the quality of service.
