IATA Seeks Value in EU Functional Airspace Blocs

Global air traffic organization International Air Transport Association today called on the European Commission, EU member states and Europe’s air navigation service providers to ensure that functional airspace blocs are delivering valuable results.

European states had a deadline for today to set up agreements grouping Europe’s 27 air navigation service providers into nine airspace blocs as a critical step toward creating the Single European Sky, which could restore competitiveness to the European air transport sector.

“While the FAB agreements are mostly in place, there are no signs of real consolidation or efficiencies of scale,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s director general and CEO, in a written statement.
