Global air freight volume in April declined 4.4 percent year-over-year, according to the latest figures from Airports Council International.
ACI said 15 of the world’s largest 20 freight hubs, which together account for more than half of total cargo movements by air, saw their volumes contract in April.
By region, North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific saw declines of 7 percent, 4.3 percent and 3.1 percent, respectively. Double-digit declines were recorded at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (16.7 percent), Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport (12.3 percent) and Flughafen (10.8 percent).
Global air freight volumes moving on international routes were 2.2 percent lower in the first four months of the year compared to the year-earlier period.
Rafael Echevarne, ACI World’s economics director, said the European debt problem is having a contagion effect on other economies and trading partners.
“Traffic volume in air freight has been curtailed not only in the economies of Europe but also in the trading hubs of North America, Asia-Pacific and Latin America,” he said.
