12th Annual California Maritime Leadership Symposium to Address Key Topics of the Maritime Transportation System

JOC Staff |
Leading California policymakers, port representatives, and maritime industry leaders will convene at the 2012 California Maritime Leadership Symposium (CMLS) to discuss key issues and seek resolution to the growing challenges facing the Maritime Transportation System. The Symposium will take place on February 1st and 2nd at the Sacramento Convention Center in the heart of downtown Sacramento.

Over the past 12 years, the CMLS has become the premier event focused on briefing Sacramento's policymakers on key matters related to California’s maritime infrastructure. The CMLS boasts a full two-day agenda featuring high level port executives, legislators and industry representatives and aims to continue this dialogue among stakeholders while highlighting emerging trends and issues. Expert panelists will discuss a variety of topics, ranging from updates on the California Freight Mobility Planning Initiatives to Maritime Security and Port Technology Briefings.

Symposium Program Sub-committee chair, Bruce Clark of the California Maritime Academy remarked on the quality of session topics for this year’s Symposium, I am very excited about the level of participants and the topics for planned presentations at this year’s California Maritime Leadership Symposium. In a time of global economic challenges, we have the opportunity to share ideas, influence policies and design solutions that will guide the development of California's ports and maritime infrastructure over the near term - decisions that will keep us competitive as the trade gateway to the United States or relinquish the field to other national or international competitors. The decisions we make today will greatly effect this debate, and I am pleased to be associated with the 12th convening of this important event.

The CMLS is a collaboration of leading organizations working to promote a productive conversation among key players in the Maritime Transportation System. Organizers include the California Association of Port Authorities (CAPA), California Marine Affairs and Navigation Conference (CMANC), California Marine & Intermodal Transportation System Advisory Council (CALMITSAC), the Harbor Association of Industry and Commerce, the Propeller Club of Los Angeles/Long Beach and the California Maritme Academy.

The CMLS will also enter into its third year of working with Three Squares Inc., a sustainability consulting firm, to continue its efforts towards reducing the environmental impact of the event. A number of greening strategies will be implemented, ranging from paperless registration to policies working to reduce catering waste. These efforts set the Symposium apart and stand as an example of its strong commitment to the environment.
